Udder Bull

What I've learned about this peculiar animated anomaly so far is that as early as August, 2004, comments have been circulating about the gender confused cows in Barnyard. But, what I still don't know is whether the cross gender cows were an intentional statement of some kind or a bizarre oversight.

Comments on Rotten Tomatoes and IMDB vary from "oh my gosh, no wonder people think America is the stupidest nation in the world" to "lighten up, you idiots, males have udders, too."

Yeah, and men have nipples but they don't lactate!

Even the kids on Nick.com's Barnyard Message Board are smart enough to ask what's up with the udders. Yeah, they noticed. Some of them, anyway. There was one kid, however, who replied to the question "If those are boy cows (bulls), then why do they have udders?" with "Hello? Because they have to be milked."

The Oedekerk Fan Site is silent on the udders and not surprisingly, Steve Odekerk isn't returning my call. Wonder how many "got milk?" hangup calls he gets...

I don't think it had anything to do with this (other than maybe being an unwitting influence), but I just recently read a horrible script for an animated film with a slew of male "cows" in it. Ugh.

Two thumbs way up for your udderly fantastic investigative reporting on this gender bending faux pas.

I hope there's something more than sour milk when you finally open the carton of truth.

My hat off to you for digging deeper, and yet, no real satisfactory explanation to date...perhaps a sequel will explain all.

Udders are probally more approiate than the alternative

Cartoonists and animators have been drawing animals for decades and never felt compelled to draw the alternative -- not on Bugs Bunny, Snoopy, Marmaduke, Winnie the Pooh or Yogi Bear. Why start now?

Even more strange, there IS a BULL in the movie. Like, a male bovine with no utters. Bessy takes a chair from him and another cow when the animals are partying. This confused me even more. The real Bull that they showed had no genitialities at all. Why didn't they do that for all the "male cows"? But I still think the movie was pretty funny (and I just turned 15).
